Batesville Introduces Innovative Endura® Burial Vaults

BatesvilleBATESVILLE, Indiana, March 3, 2011 Batesville Casket Company, the leader in the funeral service industry, formally announced its entry into the burial vault market and plans to introduce its new generation Endura® burial vaults at the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (ICCFA) Convention and Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The company has completed its market trials and will immediately begin a phased rollout of vault products and services through its Batesville Vault Solutions business unit.

“Batesville has always been driven by innovation, and it’s exciting to utilize the latest technology in materials and innovative design features to deliver a transformational product with real benefits for funeral homes, cemeteries and families,” said Joe Raver, president and chief operating officer of Batesville. “We believe this is a great investment in the future of the funeral service industry and a further reflection of Batesville’s commitment to provide innovative products and services that connect with families.” Batesville will offer a full suite of services to complement its vault products.

Purpose-driven innovation

Endura is distinct in three key areas: innovative material, appealing design and best-in-class features. Its lightweight nature is a game changer for funeral homes and cemeteries. At just 225 pounds, it can be easily transported and serviced without heavy equipment, thereby reducing labor costs, enhancing safety and minimizing wear and tear on cemetery grounds.

Made of nonporous polyethylene, a high performance polymer-based material, Endura offers the strength and durability to withstand the weight of the earth and heavy cemetery equipment, while providing significant advantages in design and overall performance, due to its manufacturing process and lightweight nature. In contrast to other polymer vaults, Endura is manufactured using multiple layers of material, the DuraStone™ shell, the DuraCore™ interior and the DuraStone lining, a process that provides three distinct barriers for exceptional strength, durability and resistance to water.

“In addition to its strength, the DuraStone shell creates a protective shield that can absorb the impact from heavy cemetery equipment,” explains Troy Turner, VP and General Manager of Batesville Vault Solutions. Turner also notes the material is non-porous and impervious to water.
Flexibility in design is another benefit of the material and rotational molding process. Rounded corners and a triple-tier top, reminiscent of some of the company’s high value caskets, give Endura a strong visual presence. Available in two rich, multi-colored granite-look finishes and a solid brown, Endura has an appealing cover design that can stand alone or accommodate basic or more extensive personalization. The tiered top and pyramid body design combine to enable an effective load-bearing distribution of the earth’s pressures.

Best-in-class features in an affordable vault

“Endura burial vaults have a host of best-in-class features and industry firsts designed to deliver greater value while enhancing the funeral experience for everyday families,” said Turner. Batesville’s EnduraLock® above-ground closing system, patented Memorial Record™ system and memorial nameplate are included at no cost. EnduraLock is an exclusive feature that provides a clean and consistent above-ground close at the gravesite, out of the way of dirt, roots and other debris that might compromise the closure. Used in conjunction with traditional butyl, the vault is ‘locked’ in 8 locations around the perimeter, providing an additional ceremonial element and greater peace of mind for families.

Structural integrity

Although polyethylene is a proven material in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications, Batesville worked with some of the country’s leading academic and engineering experts in extensive testing to help validate the structural integrity of its innovative material and product. “Testing has been a major component in our assessment,” says Turner. “We wanted to provide our funeral home customers with assurance that Endura can withstand extreme burial loads and a variety of environmental and cemetery conditions, and our tests confirmed just that.” The company also implemented stringent manufacturing standards to achieve a level of strength and durability not previously available in a lightweight vault.

Extending customer service to the graveside
The graveside service is an important step in a family’s grieving process. Building on a legacy of delivering ‘white glove’ service, Batesville’s vault services are designed to ensure that each committal service is unrivaled in professionalism, dignity and honor. The company’s offering includes the traditional elements of a graveside service, such as a lowering device, tent, grass and chairs, along with a certified vault technician to assist with the casket and flowers.  Multiple levels of service are available to fit the different needs and traditions of funeral homes and families.

“Response to the Endura product and to our vault service offerings has been extremely positive,” says Turner. “Funeral directors are impressed by the quality of the material and the value represented in its design and features, and they appreciate the convenience of being able to order the casket and vault in one call from a trusted supplier.”

Batesville will be showcasing its new burial vaults and services in its booth (423) at the ICCFA convention and Expo on March 8 – 10, 2011 in Las Vegas, NV.  Further information on Endura products will be available in the Funeral Professionals area of the company’s website at www.Batesville.com.
